Assistant Prof Position(s) at ASU School for the Future of Innovation in Society

School for the Future of Innovation in Society

Arizona State University (ASU) invites applications for one or more tenure-eligible faculty positions focused on the future of innovation in society. Anticipated start date is August 2016. The appointments will reside in the newly-created School for the Future of Innovation in Society (SFIS) and in The Polytechnic School of ASU’s Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering.

The successful candidate(s) will be expected to develop an independently funded and highly collaborative research program, teach and mentor students, participate in professional and university service, and engage stakeholders in their work – all in concert with ASU’s emphasis on access, excellence and impact. Additionally, the successful candidates will be expected to share responsibility for developing a planned research center devoted to issues in engineering, policy and society.

Required Qualifications: Doctorate in an appropriate area by the time of appointment; demonstrated research and teaching interests at the intersection of engineering, policy and society; and evidence of high performance in both research and teaching appropriate to rank.

Desired Qualifications: 1) Substantial education and training in, or engagement with, engineering; 2) demonstrated ability to work across multiple sectors in research, training, and outreach; 3) relevant policy experience or training (e.g., advanced degree in policy or related field, several years working in policy position, etc.); and 4) a specific interest in and ability to thrive within the context set by the New American University. In particular, we seek candidates with interests in one or more of the following: human- or user-centered design, big data, serious gaming, entrepreneurship and/or entrepreneurial ecosystem/thinking (including making and grassroots innovation), urban infrastructure and sustainability, and humanitarian engineering including issues of global development, equity, race and/or gender. We are also interested in candidates who bring interest in formal and informal engineering education through innovative techniques.

As the newest element of ASU’s approach to building a “New American University” (http://newamericanuniversity.asu.edu/), SFIS provides robust opportunities for intellectual fusion, use-inspired research, and global engagement via ongoing projects and centers. SFIS hosts a variety of graduate degrees including a Ph.D. in Human and Social Dimensions of Science and Technology and a Master of Science degree in Global Technology and Development, and in 2016 it will introduce an undergraduate major, minor and certificate. The planned research center will be part of the Consortium for Science, Policy and Outcomes (CSPO; www.cspo.org) – consistently ranked one of the top science and technology policy think tanks in the world – and the emerging Institute for the Future of Innovation in Society.

The Polytechnic School of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering
