Faculty Competition for Course Grants
Request for Proposals
Grants to Integrate STS Scholars into UW Courses
Spring 2010
The Robert F. and Jean E. Holtz Center for Science and Technology Studies invites proposals from STS program members (and beyond) to integrate science and technology studies scholars (broadly speaking) from outside the UW to (1) serve as guest teachers in the successful applicant’s course(s) in the spring of 2010 and (2) to give a Holtz Center-sponsored lecture. Grant money of up to $5,000 will be awarded to the winning proposal(s). The broad aim of this initiative is to build the STS community on campus and to promote interdisciplinarity. The specific purpose of each grant is to provide funds for bringing one or more visitors to the UW campus for one or two days to discuss their new research or discoveries and engage students and the STS community. Where the winning proposal brings multiple visitors to campus, the goal will be to space the visits across the semester. Each visiting scholar will participate in one session of the faculty member’s class and give a public lecture.
Support will be available for courses taught in Spring 2010. Applications (of no more than three double spaced pages) should describe the course being taught and how it will be enhanced by bringing in visiting scholars. Please attach draft syllabi, if available. Funds will be used to cover travel and accommodation expenses of visiting scholars and to provide honoraria. The successful applicant is responsible for organizing and executing the series, including inviting the speakers, arranging their travel, and organizing a meeting with STS graduate students. Logistical support will be available from the Holtz Center staff.
Please contact Daniel Kleinman (Director, dlkleinman@wisc.edu) with any questions. Submissions should be made to Adam Hinterthuer (Assistant Director, ahintert@ssc.wisc.edu) no later than December 31, 2008.
