The Holtz Center offers an annual Outreach Fellowship for UW-Madison Faculty and Staff. The Holtz Center seeks, as one of its key missions, to promote public engagement with questions concerning the relationship of society and culture with science, medicine, and technology. As such, we offer this fellowship to a faculty or academic staff member who proposes an innovative way to engage the broader community in matters of science and technology that have general social and political importance. The fellowship provides the successful applicant with $5,000 in flexible funds. Deadline: April 14, 2017.
2016-17: Jenell Johnson. Johnson used the funds to conduct a statewide series of public deliberations about genome editing.
2015-16: Sarah Pfatteicher & Jeffrey Russell. This fellowship funded an interdisciplinary conference on ethical behavior the reached both campus and non-campus audiences.
2014-15: Lynda Barry. Barry used using the fellowship to create and publish “Graphic Writing Inside Out: A Workbook” (GWIO) and to disseminate new methods for understanding and representing scientific expertise through a series of public workshops.
2013-14: Catherine Arnott Smith. Smith used the fellowship to fund a series of public forums across Wisconsin on privacy and electronic medical records.
Thematic Cluster Grants
The Robert F. and Jean E. Holtz Center for Science and Technology Studies invites proposals for our second annual competition for thematic clusters in science and technology studies (STS). We seek to fund clusters that advance research, teaching, and outreach on interdisciplinary topics within STS, conceived broadly. The successful cluster will receive two years of funding at up to $15,000/year for AYs 2018 and 2019.
Eligibility. Proposals are welcome from any faculty and staff doing STS-related work on campus. Lead faculty and staff in the groups should be willing to join the Holtz Center if not already affiliated.
Scope. The award can be used to fund any activities that fall under the purview of the Holtz Center. We seek proposals that will build community and strengthen intellectual connections across campus in a sustainable way, especially by integrating teaching, research, and outreach. The grant can be used to fund faculty workshops or conferences, engage graduate students, provide support for creating new or revised courses, organize outreach activities, and pay for outside speakers. We recommend discussing proposals with Holtz Center personnel before submission.
Application instructions. The applications are due by 6 pm March 31, 2017. The following materials are required: a one-page cover letter summarizing the proposal and listing key personnel, a five-page, double-spaced project description, a one-page budget, and 2-page c.v.’s of key personnel.
Evaluation criteria. Successful proposals will be evaluated in part by their ability to promote the following goals:
- Forge new intellectual directions and thematic research clusters within STS
• Enhance and expand participation in the STS community at UW-Madison
• Build new connections across disciplines at UW-Madison
Proposals that avoid overlap with existing clusters will receive priority. Information on previously funded clusters can be found here: http://sts.wisc.edu/research-clusters/.
