From Daffy’s Elixir to Dinitrophenol: Medicines and Their Early Regulation in America

John Swann, PhD, Historian, Food and Drug Administration

John Swann is the Chief historian at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin (Pharmacy and History of Science) and he specializes in the history of drugs, biologics, and their regulation. He received the Edward Kremers Award in 1989 for his book, Academic Scientists and the Pharmaceutical Industry: Cooperative Research in Twentieth-Century America. John’s research has appeared in ISIS, the Journal of the History of Medicine & Allied Sciences, the Bulletin of the History of Medicine, and Pharmacy in History. He is a member of the International Academy for the History of Pharmacy and is a past president of the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy.
