Abstract
New frontiers of biotechnology not only involve advanced scientific methods (e.g., CRISPR-based gene editing, gene drives), but also new application spaces in “nature.” Emerging technologies to protect biodiversity, manage invasive species, and control pests across broad landscapes disrupt one of the historical pillars of biotechnology governance: containment. With impending environmental releases – of technologies with at least the promise of public benefit – engagement with communities, stakeholders, rightsholders, and publics becomes ever more important. This presentation will draw from experiments with engagement strategies to contribute to the responsible governance of environmental biotechnologies: the genetically engineered American chestnut tree, gene drive rodents to protect island biodiversity, and genetic biocontrol for aquatic invasive species in the Great Lakes region.
