What is it to value? The case of clean in the city of Amsterdam

What it is to value, to attach, attribute, strengthen, further, serve ‘worth’, something or other good? In STS we have attended to the diverse ways in which realities are gradually constructed, or, later, enacted in practices. This was truly surprising and stood out in relation to earlier ideas in which reality, in the singular, was taken to pre-exist all knowledge about it. By now, however, it is time to come back to earlier concerns to do with normativity, with values, worth and/or good and bad. For while ‘facts’ were all too easily objectified, ‘norms’ are all too easily subjectified. But there is more to valuing than ‘people having values’. How to study this ‘more’? This question I will attend to aided by early stage case studies into the ways in which clean is enacted as a good in practices of street care and water care in and around the city of Amsterdam.
