Reginold Royston, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of African Cultural Studies, and at the Information School. He examines technoculture in Ghana and the role of the diaspora in African digital media — in areas such as cultural production, ICT infrastructure, and artificial intelligence. His work in the digital humanities explores ‘new orality’ in viral dance, podcasting and other aural media in the Black diaspora. Dr. Royston currently teaches on these topics and Internet development in the Global South generally. He is a research affiliate of the University of Ghana, Legon; Data & Society in New York; and Canada’s CIFAR. He has been doing qualitative research on digital media since 2009, initially inspired by his years as a reporter and graphics editor at National Geographic, Village Voice Media, and Knight Ridder newspapers. Dr. Royston leads Black Arts + Data Futures, and the African Global Ties research groups, is a founding member of AI4Afrika.com He is currently working on a manuscript titled Reassembling Ghana: Digital Diaspora and Hacking for Development.
